As a result of being an underground film with underground content, both the film and the music can be hard to get a hold of, not least because the subject matter and many of the featured music styles (lumped together as "Western") are currently banned by the [Iranian] regime.

I'm posting this movie review now because the film only came to my hometown this week and I saw it yesterday. It is an amazingly creative and well-done piece about how Iran's youth have to struggle so hard against their Islamist regime just to get together, have fun, and make music that isn't "un-Islamic." Based on a true story, we see the kids (who look and act like any other creative kids you may know) get their instruments confiscated, practicing their music where they won't be heard and get arrested, and simple dance parties getting raided by the "police." The kids love animals, and some regime thug kills or injures a beloved pet dog for being "unclean."
